My computer constantly gives me the message: 'This program has performed an illegal operation and will close'. It's not associated with any one program. I have just had to replace the hard disk and was hoping that after reloading all the software this problem would have gone away, but it's still there. The operating system is Windows 98. Any ideas?
This is a very general type of error message, so we can only offer some general ideas. Faulty memory or an overheating or overclocked processor could cause the problems. On the other hand, buggy graphics cards or printer drivers, or perhaps a conflict with some other software that you have reinstalled, could be to blame. You can check you have the latest drivers, but for a verdict on the hardware you really need the services of a competent computer engineer.
